Excess Baggage! Flying with musical instruments

Cost effective air travel has made a significant impact on the music business in the last few years. There is a healthy turn over of international gigs and shows that require UK based musicians to regularly hop over to many destinations in Europe and the Middle East. The Musicians Union initially worked in conjunction with the BAA and DOT to produce a card that instructed airline staff about current BAA guidelines for touring musicians. This seems to be largely ignored or ineffectual now and something has to be done. MP Janet Anderson has drafted an early day motion with a view to clarify this issue.
Early Day Motion EDM 1296 INSTRUMENTS ON PLANES Anderson, Janet “That this House notes that the vast majority of musicians have to travel with their instruments in the course of making their living; further notes the lack of consistent policy between airlines and airports on the transportation of musical instruments; is concerned that restrictions on transporting musical instruments should not be influenced by commercial incentives; and therefore urges the Government to develop a clear and consistent policy for airlines that allows musicians to be able to continue to travel with their instruments without incurring unfair financial penalties.” I would like to urge all musicians to support this motion and it is easier to do than you may imagine. You can find your MP here www.theyworkforyou.com and then all you have to do is write them a short letter asking for their support on this motion. The EDM can be found here www.tinyurl.com/3j2ezx. I included the EDM in my message and asked my MP for his support. He has written to the Minister for Transport asking for support with this motion and I have received this a letter this week from the House of Commons. It took ten minutes. Thank you for your time and happy touring. Paul Fawcus
